Synopsis: Ordinary Heroes

In 1960, the New York Yankees won three games in the World Series by
scores of 16-3, 10-0, and 12-0. They led the final game 7-4 in the eighth inning.
However, they lost this World Series, 4 games to 3 games.
This is the true story of two boys whose shared passion for the game of baseball draws
them together as friends, teammates, rivals, and finally, as champions. It is also a story
of America throughout the first half of the twentieth century. Set against the
background of America’s favorite past time, baseball, the boys struggle for
their dream like so many other ordinary Americans. In the midst of one of the most
turbulent times in American and world history, they overcome obstacles and adversities
to finally reach together, side by side, their wildest childhood dream -
to become champions at the top of the baseball world, one as manager and the other as coach
of the 1960 MLB World Series Champions, the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The primary focus is on Danny Murtaugh, who like many boys in 1920s and 1930s
America, began playing baseball in neighborhood pickup games with beaten and
battered gloves, taped bats and balls; playing in an urban setting on uneven, hole-
ridden dirt fields, unfenced backyards, or gravel parking lots, and occasionally, a few
grassy fields. The story follows Danny from his boyhood home in the grey, gritty city of
Chester, PA as his boyhood passion for baseball leads him to meet a new friend,
Mickey Vernon. Mickey is a year younger and from Marcus Hook, a small borough
four miles below Chester, and is a fellow sandlot player who shares a love for baseball.
These two boys, one with star-quality talent and the other with gritty determination,
become smitten with America’s favorite pastime and they leave home and family together
to proceed courageously towards a career in professional baseball.
They share a journey that will make them smile, grimace, shudder, cry, and
face life’s hardest trials, including a world war. These two boyhood friends overcome the
great odds thrust against them and achieve baseball immortality by living life
and playing baseball, the right way.
